Getting Your Pet to take their Medication

When it comes to medication, pets can be just as averse to taking it as their human owners. Sometimes even seeing the package that arrives from your online pharmacy that contains their medication can send them into hiding. However, since keeping your pet healthy includes making sure they take their pet meds as instructed by the veterinarian, sometimes you have to get creative in order to get them to take it. If you have a pet that you have to fight with to get to take their meds, then here are a few tips to help make the process a little easier.

By far the most common way to get pets to take their meds is to mix it in with their food. Pills can be easily disguised when mixed in with wet pet food. However, if your pet eats dry food they will be able to easily spot it and pick it out or eat around it. Therefore, you can try disguising the medication you get from your online pharmacy in a favourite treat. For dogs, this would probably be a spoonful of peanut butter or a piece of meat. For cats, you may have to squish them into specially made cat cookies whose recipes you can find online.

Sometimes pets won't take pills but have no problem swallowing liquid medication. Talk to your vet and see if there is a liquid form of the medication available and have them prescribe that. When filling the prescription at your local or online pharmacy, look to see if the medication comes in different flavours. Getting medicine in a flavour they like may make your pet more amendable to ingesting it. If the medicine doesn't come in liquid form, ask your vet if you can ground up the pills and mix them with a liquid, like chicken stock, to make your own liquid medication.

If there are no alternative forms of the medication available and your pet just will not swallow the pills, then you may have to gently force them to take their meds. You will need to secure the dog. Small animals can sit in your lap while you may need someone to help you with a big animal. Get the animal to open its mouth and then shove the pill as far to the back of the throat as you can. Close their mouth and then gently massage their neck to make sure they swallow it. It is an unpleasant experience for both you and the pet but when it comes to keeping them healthy then you should every method you can think of to make sure they take their meds.
